"Asylum seekers get free houses"

FACT: Asylum seekers do not get free houses. They are provided with basic accommodation while their claim is processed, often in shared housing or hostels. This is temporary support, not permanent housing.

"They can work immediately"

FACT: Asylum seekers are NOT allowed to work while their claim is being processed, unless they've been waiting over 12 months through no fault of their own. Even then, work is restricted to the shortage occupation list.

"Asylum seekers receive generous benefits"

FACT: Asylum seekers receive £49.18 per week (as of 2024) - significantly less than UK benefits. This is meant to cover all essential living needs including food, clothing, and toiletries.
