Common Claims Debunked
Evidence-based responses to common misconceptions
Claim: "They should claim asylum in the first safe country"
The Reality:
There is NO legal requirement under international law to claim asylum in the first safe country reached. The 1951 Refugee Convention allows people to seek asylum in any signatory country.
Why This Matters:
- Refugees may have family connections in specific countries
- They may speak the language of their destination country
- Some countries have much higher acceptance rates than others
- Border countries would be overwhelmed if this were law
Legal Basis:
Article 31 of the 1951 Refugee Convention does not restrict where asylum can be claimed.
Claim: "The UK takes more refugees than other countries"
The Reality:
The UK receives significantly fewer asylum applications per capita than many other European countries. In 2023, the UK ranked around 20th in Europe for asylum applications per capita.
The Numbers:
- Germany, France, and Spain all receive more applications
- Per capita, countries like Austria, Switzerland, and Cyprus receive far more
- The vast majority of refugees (85%) remain in developing countries
- Turkey hosts approximately 3.6 million refugees alone

Claim: "They're economic migrants, not real refugees"
The Reality:
The UK's asylum system rigorously assesses each claim. People are only granted refugee status if they meet the strict criteria defined in the 1951 Refugee Convention.
The Facts:
- Asylum seekers undergo extensive interviews and background checks
- They must prove a well-founded fear of persecution
- The process can take months or years
- 60-75% of decisions result in protection being granted
- Refused cases can appeal with additional evidence
Legal Definition:
A refugee is someone with a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of a particular social group.
