Healthcare Access Rights

You have the right to access NHS healthcare services. Here's how to register and what services are available.

NHS Access for Asylum Seekers

As an asylum seeker, you have the right to free NHS healthcare. This includes GP services, hospital treatment, mental health services, and maternity care. You don't need to pay NHS charges that other migrants might face.

Registering with a GP

Find a GP surgery near your accommodation and register. You'll need your ARC card and proof of address (a letter from your accommodation provider works). If a surgery refuses to register you, they're wrong - challenge this or try another surgery.

Emergency Care

Call 999 for life-threatening emergencies. Visit A&E (Accident & Emergency) for urgent non-life-threatening issues. For medical advice, call NHS 111 (free from any phone). Interpreters should be provided if needed.

Mental Health Support

Many asylum seekers experience trauma, anxiety, or depression. You can access mental health services through your GP. There are also specialist organizations that support asylum seekers with trauma (Freedom from Torture, ASSIST, local refugee counseling services).

Important Points to Remember

  • All NHS healthcare is free for asylum seekers - you should not be charged
  • You don't need proof of address or ID to use A&E
  • Pregnant asylum seekers get full maternity care for free
  • Children get free dental care, prescriptions, and eye tests
  • You can request a same-gender doctor if needed

Common Misconceptions

Myth: Asylum seekers take up NHS resources from UK citizens
Reality: Asylum seekers make up less than 1% of NHS users
Myth: You need documents to access healthcare
Reality: You can access emergency care without any documents
